WINSFORD Rugby Union Club, kicked into touch two years ago, could be back on its feet by the weekend.

Members of Winsford's last team, which broke up mid-season in 1999, are meeting on Sunday with a view to reviving rugby union in the town.

They are also hoping to attract new players to the club when they get together on Sunday night for make or break discussions.

A severe lack of players meant that, in their final days, matches were having to be cancelled or played out without a full team.

Ironically, this farcical situation arose less than a year after the club announced their most ambitious expansion plans yet, hoping to set up Winsford's first junior rugby club.

Former captain John Murphy has not organised the meeting, but feels that the key to success is having a properly co-ordinated committee.

"We struggled with a committee last time," said Murphy. "They didn't have support from certain people and players started making their way to other clubs.

"We were turning up for games with 12 players and that was disappointing so if we get it going again we don't want that kind of thing.

"There's a lot of local lads in Winsford who want to play rugby. We would have enough for a full team and a few extras, and we still have money in the kitty from last time.

"These players are fed up of going to play rugby at Northwich and Winnington Park, but if we can get a good committee here we can do it."

Old members and any new ones interested in joining are urged to turn up at the White Lion on Sunday at 8pm.

Should Winsford get up and running again, they hope to resurrect their base at Knight's Grange.
