A HISTORICAL journey, which laid the foundations for modern-day Earlestown, is set to be recreated this Saturday as part of the town's 150th birthday celebrations.

Exactly a century-and-a-half ago, Sir Hardman Earle arrived by train from Liverpool to sign a lease for Vulcan Foundry.

This was the catalyst for the construction of 365 homes in the area, in what soon became known as Earlestown, in the industrialist's honour. An actor portraying Sir Hardman Earle will be met at Earlestown station by a birthday parade, led by Haydock Silver Band, and accompanied by residents from Wood Court sheltered housing complex in period costume.

Wood Court stands near the site of the old foundry.

Town leaders hope this will be the catalyst for a year-round programme of 150th birthday celebrations.
