A £250,000 project to resurface part of the M6 has started.

The work, which aims to remove wheel tracks from heavy lorries, is taking place on the northbound carriageway between junction 21a at Croft and junction 23 at Haydock.

Highways bosses say the scheme, which is taking place close to the already clogged up Thelwall Viaduct, has been planned to minimise disruption to traffic.

Colin Robinson, Highways Agency Project Manager, said: "This is a very busy section of the M6 between the M56 and the M62 with a large number of heavy goods vehicles, which has resulted in wheel ruts in the inside lane.

"With the close proximity to the existing roadworks on the Thelwall Viaduct, we shall be carrying out the work overnight at weekends to minimise disruption."

Work will suspend for Christmas on Saturday, December 13, before resuming on Friday, January 9. The project is due to be completed by the end of January.
