OUR Warrington Anglers' Association working party had a fairly successful day on Sunday when we netted once again a small reservoir owned by Ineos Fluor Limited at Runcorn.

Although the resident roach seemed to vanish deep into weed cover we managed to confuse a few, which were released into the small lake at Sandiway.

From an initial enquiry by employee and WAA member Fred Whitfield it has developed into an ongoing 'partnership'. The small water, which is an oasis amid industrial surroundings, daily attracts employees who feed the resident fish from their lunch box leftovers. They will have some new arrivals to feed before Christmas when, again in a joint venture, tench will be introduced to grow on for stocking into local fisheries.

After several years searching, we have managed to source and purchase a six-inch pump suitable for managing the water level at Moore Quarry. I managed to get the dealer to throw in a four-inch pump for good measure. However, both pumps came without pipes so if anyone has any ideas where we can locate some at a suitable price, please let me know.

Bailiff Geoff Gauton, a member of the Pike Anglers Club, reported being told of a youngster catching a 26lbs pike from the Agden area last Wednesday. The down side to the capture was that the young angler did not have the correct gear to safely unhook the fish. Thankfully, the day was saved by a senior member who was tackled up correctly and the fish was released unharmed. Anglers must have at least an unhooking mat, stout leather glove and a long pair of forceps whenever they target this prehistoric predator. Conservation must always be foremost in our minds and to this end it is intended to hold another Pike Angling Club tuition day soon after Christmas. I will publish the date in a future column.

It happens every year during the autumn/winter change - someone who has been catching well from the Bridgewater Canal all summer long comes out with the gem 'you should put some more fish in that canal'. Where are the fish that were actually the subject of reports in this column only months ago in the warmer weather? I rest my case!

Construction of the new pegs gets under way this weekend at Town Park Lake so if anyone fancies helping, turn up at 10am Saturday and Sunday.

The Warrington Match Squad won the Mid-Cheshire Winter League at the weekend. Squad manager Pete Cummings and the team members put in a lot of hard work to win the series. Congratulations go to them.
