THERE was a major shock in store on Saturday as Warrington Soccer League Division One team Vulcan were dumped out of the Guardian Cup by minnows Mill Brow.

The third division side made light of difficult conditions to reach the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory. Their goal scorers against former winners Vulcan were Lee Forber and Ian Mason.

Warrington Borough, Town's reserve team, also won 2-1 to become one of three Mid-Cheshire Soccer League teams to reach the quarter-finals stage. They inflicted the first defeat of the season on Downall Green United thanks to goals by Danny Boardman and Dave Tickle while Padgate St Oswalds recorded a hard earned win at Penlake.

Padgate progressed to the last eight thanks to goals by Tony Healey and Brendan Hennessey. Gareth Plunkett was on target for Penlake.

Daten enjoyed a thumping 5-0 win at near neighbours Croft to complete a good day for the Mid-Cheshire Soccer League while the all Frontrunner Premier Division tie between champions Whiston Cross and contenders Eagle Sports went the way of the visitors.

Eagle won 4-3 and the result may signal a shift in the league's balance of power. Whiston are now out of both cup competitions and they are also lagging behind in the race to retain their title.

Fearnhead Albion's extra firepower served them well in their match at nearby Monk Sports.

Monk netted via Shane Jarvis, two and Danny Gallop but Fearnhead were always on top with Johnny Brennan a constant menace. He bagged four goals and Fearnhead's other goal scorer was Steve Bate.

On the league front, Greenalls recorded their first Premier Division win. Fergus Morris scored both of their goals at Haydock.

In Division One, Moorfield boosted their title chances with a 3-2 win against table topping Rainhill Town.
