Mr William Henry (Harry) Hewitt, husband of Mrs Beryl Hewitt, died of pancreatic cancer on November 13. He was 81.

Mr Hewitt was born in Workington and had lived in Grappenhall for 31 years.

At 19 years old he joined the Cumberland and Westmorland Constabulary, and retired after 30 years' service, having reached the rank of sergeant.

During the Second World War he volunteered for training as aircrew in the RAF, and returned to the police service four years later, having obtained the rank of flying officer pilot.

After his retirement from the police force he worked for a short time with Tyne Services GB Ltd in Carlisle, before moving to Grappenhall to marry.

Mr Hewitt enjoyed playing and watching rugby, bowls and golf.

He leaves his wife, a son, a daughter, a stepson, a stepdaughter, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A service was held on November 20 at Grappenhall Methodist Chapel, followed by cremation at Walton Lea. Mr Roger Hazeldine officiated.
