Barrow Island 8 Bold Miners 10

BOLD maintained their challenge for the premier title in this hard fought game at Barrow Island.

The game was played in driving rain and a gale force wind which suited the big Barrow Island pack.

Playing with the wind on their backs Barrow was first on the attack and their big second row crashed over under the posts for a converted try.

At this stage of the game Barrow were camped on the Bold line and only good defence from Dave Scott, Dave Hill and full back Carl Anders kept them out.

A strong run from man of the match prop Paul Rigby relieved the pressure but the ball went to ground with the Barrow line becoming. A Barrow converted penalty put them eight nil up at half time.

In the second half with the conditions getting worse Bold were struggling to find their rhythm and it took a great effort from props Paul Rigby, Ian Lynch and hooker Ian Honey to keep them in the game.

With ten minute to go it looked curtains for Bold and it took a great try from centre Danny Lavin to put them back in the game.

From the restart a bad tackle on Ian Lynch gave Bold a free kick and player coach Darren Anders put the ball in touch inches from the Barrow corner flag.

From the tap, hooker Ian Honey broke the Barrow defence, slipped the ball to Dave Hill who went in beneath the posts for the winning try, converted by Mark Saunders.

In the last minute Barrow broke away but a great tackle from full back Carl Anders saved the day.

Grundy Excavations man of the match went to Paul Rigby and Carl Anders with Ian Lynch, Ian Honey and Dave Hill playing well.
