BROOK went out of this season's Powergen Challenge Cup despite a spectacular display under the floodlights at Leigh on Friday night.

Brook matched their high flying Conference League opponents try for try in the first 62 minutes of the match before the home side's superior pace of play finally took its toll in the last quarter.

Brook were unlucky not to take the lead, after five minutes Paul Fass was adjudged to be offside as he collected a kick through and crossed the try line beneath the posts. Four tries followed in the next 10 minutes with Brook's twins Craig and Scott Lyon replying to efforts from the home side.

Miners' goal kicker Radley, who landed 10 kicks from 10 attempts on the night, extended the lead with two penalties, however scrum half Mark Gibson kept Brook in touch with a try on the half hour mark.

The second half began with Brook piling pressure on the home sides try line and they were rewarded when Ian Williams burrowed his way over to score, Paul Toole added the conversion to reduce the arrears to only two points.

Miners stormed back with a converted solo try from full back Pilkington and a further Radley penalty.

Brook would not lie down at this stage and a powerful surging run from Dave Walker produced the props first try of the season, youngster Chris Canning added the goal to bring Brook to within four points of their hosts with 20 minutes remaining.

Brook began to tire and Leigh Miners ran in four converted tries in the last 15 minutes. The final score line does not reflect the game and Blackbrook can be proud of their performance in this cup-tie.

Radley was selected as the man of the match with Dave Walker selected as Brook's Nexus man of the match just ahead of his 16 colleagues.

Brook are at home this Saturday with Widnes Albion the visitors to Boardmans Lane, the match kicks off at 2pm.
