GOLBORNE Parkside's under 18s Rugby League team have booked their place in the final of the BARLA Lancashire Cup.

They did so thanks to an almighty effort in defeating arch-rivals Leigh Miners 10-9 in Sunday's semi-final.

Golborne will meet St. Helens outfit Blackbrook in the final at a venue and on a date yet to be announced.

The achievement of the Golborne side should not be under estimated.

They faced a Miners team who had brought players in from their open age side and started favourites after their 30-12 league win against Golborne a few weeks ago.

Golborne had their own plans of gaining victory and they were also in a confident mood after their 30-12 victory over Leigh East the previous week.

The victory was only sealed in the dying moments when centre Stuart Goulding touched down his second try. Ashall still needed to kick the goal and he remained cool to put Golborne through.

Coach Terry Byrne praised all of his players for a great team effort, specially in defence, as they kept their try line intact.

The game started at a tremendous pace with both sides playing fast flowing rugby but both defences were up to the mark.

Midway through the first half Golborne missed a kickable penalty chance at goal and Miners made them pay when they took a 2-0 lead through Ridyard when they were awarded a penalty.

Miners brought the first half to an end when Ridyard kicked his second penalty.

The second half began in the same fashion as the first with end to end rugby.

Golborne began to hold the territorial advantage and midway through the second half they levelled the score with a well taken try from impressive centre Goulding.

Play was still going from end to end at a furious pace with 15 minutes remaining as Miners regained the lead 5-4 with a Ridyard drop goal.

For the next 13 minutes Golborne were under pressure as two disputed penalties, both converted by Ridyard, came while playing the game out with a man short due to talking back to the referee.

Golborne faced the last two minutes with 12 men and a 9-4 deficit but they gained possession in the Miners half and drove towards the try line.

The ball was worked to the right. Stand off Stuart Arkwright switched the ball inside to loose forward Ashall, who held off three desperate defenders to put Goulding over narrowly wide of the posts.
