CONGLETON Town climbed four places to eighth in the table on Tuesday after a narrow win over strugglers Abbey Hey.

The Bears created numerous chances in their home game, and should have been comfortable winners.

However they had to be content with a goal early in the second half from Ellis, who headed in from close range.

The victory followed a 2-0 win for Congleton on Saturday at mid-table Salford City, the goals coming on three and 70 minutes.

"We deserved to win on Tuesday on the number of chances we created," said Congleton treasurer Ken Mead.

"We should have been three up in the first six minutes, but they didn't go in, and we had the feeling it was going to be one of those nights."

The Abbey keeper knocked a back pass into the path of Worthington in the opening minute.

He crossed for Williams coming in at the far post, but he volleyed wide.

On five minutes Scully fired over the bar, and the next minute Williams crossed for Riley to shoot over.

Park fired over from an angle, and Clegg for Abbey headed into keeper Conkie's arms on 20 minutes.

A Worthington shot on 24 minutes hit the keeper's legs and looped on top of the bar.

From the resulting corner Ellis shot at the keeper.

Ellis had another shot on 28 minutes stopped by the keeper, and Hayder for Abbey put efforts over and wide in a five-minute period.

Pearson shot wide for Abbey on 40 minutes, and Congleton took the lead on 53 minutes.

The Abbey keeper took a free kick off Worthington's toes, and Congleton should have scored when Scully was brought down by the keeper on 80 minutes.

However he missed the subsequent penalty.

The Bears took the lead against Salford when Worthington hit a diagonal cross for Scully.

He headed it on to Kay, who pushed the ball over the line at the far post.

Congleton scored their second with 20 minutes left following a well-worked free kick routine.

Scully chipped the ball over the wall, and Ellis fired home.

"We restricted them to shots from the edge of the box, and didn't have many anxious moments," said Mr Mead.

Congleton are at home to Newcastle Town tomorrow in the League Cup, and travel to Warrington next Tuesday.
