IKEA has re-launched a rainbow-layered cake which hopes to raise funds for a mental health confidential helpline for the LGBTQ+ community.

The homeware company, which first came to the UK with its warehouse in Warrington in 1987, has re-launched the cake in solidarity with June's status as Pride month.

This charity bake made its debut in June last year, and proceeds from the sale of the cake in IKEA's UK stores raised £38,000 for the helpline charity.

The charity in question is Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline, one of the UK’s longest-running charities serving the LGBTQ+ community, who provide a safe and confidential helpline listening service on the phone, instant message, and email.

IKEA's rainbow cake goes on sale alongside the 'STORSTOMMA' rainbow bag, which is now available all year round, with all profits donated to LGBTQ+ charities and initiatives across the UK and Ireland.

Karen Hughes, country food manager at IKEA UK and Ireland said: “We are proud to be able to support our LGBTQ+ co-workers and customers year-round, but especially during Pride month.

"Our rainbow cake allows us to contribute to Switchboard once again and support the invaluable work they do for the LGBTQ+ community.

"At IKEA UK, we strive to be an inclusive space, for both customers and co-workers alike, and our priority is ensuring everyone feels welcomed and supported.”

Stephanie Fuller, CEO of Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline, said: “We are delighted to have the support of IKEA once again.

"This year we launched our free phone number to ensure that cost would never be a barrier for anyone getting the support they need from our trained listening volunteers.

"The donations raised from the sale of the rainbow cake will help us ensure we can continue to fund a free-to-access service.”

IKEA's rainbow-layered cake went on sale at the beginning of June, and will be available until June 30 at IKEA stores in the UK.
