A SCHOOL football team in Warrington is making history and is bidding to reach a national final.

The Great Sankey High School Year 7 boys team have swept all before them across eight rounds ahead of the semi-finals in the ESFA Boys Under 12 PlayStation 9-a-side Schools Cup.

This is the furthest any Warrington team has reached in the competition and standing in their way of a place in the final are Northampton School for Boys, who they face at Great Sankey High School on Monday, kick-off 1pm.

The boys are no strangers to lifting silverware, having already won one competition earlier this year and now they are one of the last four sides standing from the 636 schools who started out in the event.

They have achieved some big wins and knocked out some highly respected opposition on their journey so far.

Andy McCann, head of KS4 at Great Sankey High School, manages the team with support from assistant manager, James Edgar, a PE teacher at the school.

He said: "We're proud of the players to reach the semi final which is the furthest a Warrington school has ever got before but we're very much aware we've achieved nothing yet and need to win two more massive games to cement a legacy in Warrington junior football.

"The boys have already won a schools competition at Manchester United training complex earlier in the year, which was very sweet as me and Mr Edgar are big Liverpool fans!

"The boys have been brilliant so far, scoring 45 goals in eight games and beating some of the most highly regarded teams from across the country on the way.

"We have prepared well and will give it our all in the semi-final."
