A MAJOR incident could have been caused through the mindless action of arsonists.

This was due to a wheelie bin being set on fire on a railway embankment in Fairfield.

One fire engine from Warrington Fire Station was dispatched to the line near Hume Street shortly before 9pm last night, Tuesday.

On arrival, the crew located the wheelie bin and extinguished the flames using a hose reel water jet.

Following the incident, a spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire is believed to have started deliberately. Anyone with information should call Cheshire Police on 101.”

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred, with another arson fire being lit in the same location last month.

Firefighters were previously called to the railway line shortly before 8.30pm on Saturday, July 2, due to someone deliberately setting the embankment alight.

In an update afterwards, a spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Setting any fire like this deliberately is an offence.

“Please report anyone you see lighting fires in the open.”
