A WARRINGTON rower is celebrating gold medal success in the European Championships.

Warrington Rowing Club's former Lymm High School student Lucy Glover, 23, won gold in the women's quadruple sculls in Munich with crewmates Jess Leyden, Lola Anderson, and Georgie Brayshaw.

Their performance was described by British Rowing chiefs as 'outstanding' as they became the first GB crew to win a women’s quad gold medal in more than 10 years.

Leyden, speaking for the team, said: “We’ve worked so hard for this, we’ve changed what we needed to change and we’ve all committed to our training and racing and it’s really paying off.”

Forty-eight hours earlier the quartet won their heat and Glover said: “We felt in control and just trusted each other and our speed.

Glover was alongside most of the crew who were silver medallists at World Rowing Cup III earlier this summer.

This time Glover, Leyden and Brayshaw had Anderson with them in place of Kyra Edwards in a repeat of World Cup I, where they came a creditable fourth after doubling up in the quad and double sculls.

Glover was part of the GB women’s quad that won silver at last year’s Europeans, together with Hannah Scott and the Hodgkins-Byrne sisters.
