JAMES Guy has capped off the Birmingham Commonwealth Games swimming meet in the best way possible – by winning a gold medal.

The 26-year-old completed a stunning collection of six medals over five days by finishing first in the men's 4x100m relay alongside England teammates Brodie Williams, James Wilby and Tom Dean.

Together they edged out Australia by 0.08 seconds in a thrilling finish at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

“When you swim in a relay, you have the whole country behind you," said a jubilant Guy, a one-time Warrington Under 11s Junior Sports Personality of the Year winner.

"Tonight was a real dogfight between us and the Aussies. We knew it would be tight but it was about swimming a smart race and getting the tactics right, which we did.

"It’s the best crowd I’ve ever heard. When they’re cheering for us, it’s so much more inspirational. It’s great to end the week on a high."

Warrington Guardian:

Guy, a former pupil at Our Ladys Catholic Primary School and Cardinal Newman High School, swam the fly leg en route to adding a gold to the three silvers and two bronzes he had already bagged this Games, including an individual silver in the 100m fly and a bronze in the mixed 4x100m medley relay last night.

That was another show of brilliant stamina by the Team Bath competitor.

For his third medal, silver with the Team England 4x200m freestyle relay team on Monday night, was achieved around 90 minutes after contesting the 100m fly semi-finals.

He already had two medals in his pocket by then.

Guy helped the England men's 4x100m freestyle relay team win silver in another thrilling final on Saturday night.

Guy then won bronze in the men's 200m fly final on Sunday night, having qualified seventh fastest in that morning's heats.

His performance now eclipses the five medals he won at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast of Australia four years ago.

He now has 12 Commonwealth Games medals in his career.

And while his Games exploits are now over for another edition, there is no resting on his laurels because the European Championships are looming.
