FOLLOWING a spate of illegal traveller encampments across the town of late, questions have been raised regarding a transit site.
A number of unauthorised camps have been set up in the borough over recent weeks and months, including notable instances on Orford Park, Peel Hall Park and Dallam Playing Fields.
Questions have been asked by residents as to what is happening with a proposed £2million transit site to accommodate travellers passing through the town.
The idea is that a designated site would vastly reduce the number of illegal camps in Warrington, as well as the expense to taxpayers.
As previously reported in 2015, funding has been set aside in the Labour-run council’s capital budget for the facility, which would allow officers to direct groups to the land.
When asked for an update by the Warrington Guardian, a Warrington Borough Council spokesman said: “We are continuing to work with our partners to identify a suitable traveller transit site in the borough.
“The need for this is fully established in the submitted proposed local plan that is subject to examination in public in September.”
