WHAT a night it has been for Warrington at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Basketball player Hannah Jump and swimmer James Guy flew the flag for the town as they won three medals between them for Team England in the space of two hours.

First Guy, the 26-year-old former Cardinal Newman High School student, collected silver in the men's 100m fly final as he finished joint second with Australia's Matthew Temple, both narrowly defeated by Canadian Joshua Liendo Edwards.

It was the fourth medal of the Games for him.

And then Jump capped a stunning series of performances with the England 3x3 basketball team with a silver medal against Canada at the city centre Smithfield site.

Jump, though, will have been heartbroken to have missed out on gold on the last throw of the game.

The 21-year-old ex-pupil of St Matthew's C of E Aided Primary School, Stretton, played a starring role in the three group matches, quarter-final success against Kenya and semi-final victory over Australia.

Concluding the night in the pool, Guy clinched bronze with the mixed 4x100m medley relay team.

He swam the fly on the third leg, with Freya Anderson taking over and bringing the team home third after a huge battle with Canada (second) and South Africa (fourth), while Australia were the winners.

“We’ve all had individuals this evening but we’re putting in a big effort for the team," said Guy after collecting his fifth medal of the Games.

"Freya put in an absolutely champion back 50 even though she may be a bit gutted about it. We should be really proud of that.”

Lauren Cox and James Wilby completed the England team.
