A RAILWAY line in Warrington was closed following a death on the tracks this morning, Monday.

The tragic incident occurred at around 9am near to Sankey for Penketh station, with emergency services in attendance.

Police have sadly confirmed that the nature of the incident was a person being pronounced dead at the scene.

The railway line was blocked between Warrington Central and Liverpool Lime Street, with cancellations to trains using the route, but it has now reopened.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “British Transport Police were called to the line near Warrington at 9.15am today, Monday, July 25, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

Warrington Guardian:

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

A Northern spokesman earlier added: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Warrington Central and Liverpool Lime Street, the line is blocked.

“Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled or suspended between Mossley Hill and Warrington Central.

“Customers travelling between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road are advised to use services that call at stations via Newton le Willows.

“Road replacement has been recruited, with ticket acceptance on Merseyrail services between Liverpool Central and Hunts Cross.”
