EVENTS aiming to get communities and businesses in Warrington excited about the Rugby League World Cup have been organised.

The town is set to host the Papua New Guinea men’s team, with the Halliwell Jones Stadium also the stage of three men’s group game fixtures, as well as a men’s quarter final game.

In addition, Warrington will also be leading a festival of physical disability rugby league. The World Cup competition begins on Saturday, October 15.

Before then however, the town is making preparations to celebrate the important role it will play as part of the tournament through a celebratory host impact day.

The day, which takes place on Tuesday, June 21, will kick off with a business breakfast at the Halliwell Jones Stadium from 8.30am to 10am.

Businesses can enjoy a breakfast in the company of rugby league legends Adrian Morley and Jodie Cunningham while learning more about the tournament.

This will be followed by a walking rugby taster session between 11am and 12.15pm outside Warrington Town Hall – where everyone is welcome.

There will also be a schools event at Victoria Park from 1.30pm to 2.30pm and photo opportunities with the trophies at Orford Jubilee Hub from 4pm to 5pm.

The day will conclude with a visit to the new Warrington Youth Zone between 6pm and 7pm.

Cllr Tony Higgins, Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and community, says he hopes residents will fully embrace the tournament and build-up.

He said: “The Rugby League World Cup will be one of the biggest, best and most inclusive tournaments ever, and an important part is encouraging our communities to get involved.

“This host impact day is a chance to keep the momentum going as we head towards the tournament.

“It is also a great opportunity for us to create a network of community voices and advocates for the tournament, encouraging local businesses, children and residents to get involved and spread the word about the valuable part Warrington will play in this year’s tournament.”
