A MUM has set up her dream business in floristry at the age of 50.

Kay Shields, from Newton-le-Willows, has always had a passion for floristry.

Now she has finally decided to give her dream career a go.

The 50-year-old set up her business, Newtons Blooms, in April and has received a positive welcome from community members and businesses.

Kay said: “It’s going well so far. I’m making links with local businesses in the community, and I’ve lived in Newton-le-Willows all my life, so I know a lot of people here. I’ve been very heavily involved in the local community.”

The self-employed florist studied floristry at Newton Technical College, however, her dream career came to a halt due to current circumstances at the time.

The former School Business Manager found that now was the right time to revisit her hobby, and finally set up her own florist business.

The mum-of-two added: “I’ve always enjoyed my floristry. I’ve done arrangements for families and friends in the past as a hobby.

“I had an opportunity now to set up a home-based business, so fortunately I’ve got the space to work at home and then it gives me the flexibility around family as well.”

Newtons Blooms offers flower arrangements for various occasions, including weddings and funerals.

Discussing setting up her own business later in life, Kay said: “Changing my career and starting my own floristry business at 50 has been a scary step for me. I have been considering the change for some time now, but never had the confidence or belief in myself - especially at my age.

“But with the help and support of others, and a change in my own thinking and attitude, I have taken that first step towards my career change and developing as a businesswoman in my local community.

“You are never too old to change things, and by doing the right things, the right things will happen. You can develop yourself, your career, and your passions on whatever you set your mind too.”

Newtons Blooms currently operates on social media, however, a website will be set up in the coming weeks.
