WARRINGTON Wolves will be looking to prevent a treble loss to Wakefield Trinity this season when they head into Yorkshire this afternoon.

The Wire, who are on a run of four straight defeats, fell at home to Willie Poching’s side 38-22 in their previous Super League meeting in March and then 16-12 a week later in the Challenge Cup, also at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Wolves head coach Daryl Powell highlighted what had been learned from those defeats that could be helpful to his side today.

“A fair bit. We know where the threats are. I thought Mason Lino caused us a hell of a lot of trouble last time, and Jacob Miller’s kicking game is good,” said the Wire chief.

“The last game we played against them was pretty tight and to lose the game from being 12-0 up was really disappointing at the time.

“They’re not doing anything different, they’re doing the same things. Mason Lino is still a threat, and they’ve got Lee Gaskell in there which is a little bit different, Rob Butler’s in there from the bench.

“It’s pretty much the same team. They are dangerous, they play a lot of rugby, they move the ball a fair bit.”

Warrington have conceded 40 points or more in three of their last four games, which has provided a clear focus for where a fix is needed.

“The defence has got to aim up and clearly ours has got to aim up more consistently and it’s got to be a lot stiffer. If we start with our defence and get that right and build on the back of that it will be a good starting point for us,” said Powell.

It was put to Powell this week that sometimes when your luck is down it can feel like everything is going against you.

He acknowledged the point and offered a way out of that scenario.

“There’s the St Helens game which was a really tight game and there’s the Hull game away which I still don’t know how we didn’t win,” said Powell.

“It tends to be that way doesn’t it. When you’re down on your luck, things are going against you consistently and when people aren’t playing well it feels like that.

“But the one thing that can help you get out of it is just working hard. It’s just effort, to stay true to what you believe in “I think we’ll be alright. I think we’ll work our way out of it. This is a great opportunity for us to do that this week. We can’t keep waiting for the next week, it’s got to start now and it’s got to be consistent.

“There’s been a lot gone against us, but I don’t think that we’ve worked consistently hard enough to get the job done. And that’s where it’s got to change.

“I’ve heard a bit of that this week. When I first went to Castleford as coach I remember fans saying to me all we want to see is a team working hard. And I said ‘well, I want a fair bit more than that’.

“But obviously that is the starting point. I’m constantly into the team that we have to work hard consistently.

“I don’t think the schedule has helped us recently but we’ve got to find that consistency of effort, of performance, of durability, of toughness, of all those things that make a really good rugby league team. We find it, but we don’t find it consistently and we don’t find it for long enough.

“And that’s where we know we have to be better. This is not just me saying this, this is the whole group. We know what we’ve got to do to get where we need to get to.”
