NEARLY five years ago, I went to my first festival.

It was something like I’d never experienced before. Two words; Leeds and carnage.

You’re probably wondering what relevance this has to Neighbourhood Weekender – but stick with me.

On the bill at the time was Liam Gallagher, my main musical idol of mine at the time and still up there now.

I was a fan of Kasabian but I thought Liam would steal the show easily in my eyes.

He was, of course, magic but one night later, I came out of the main stage having seen Kasabian and in awe at how good they were.

It was organised chaos of the best kind. They stole the show.

And nearly five years later, the Serge Pizzorno-led band brought that to Neighbourhood Weekender last night, Sunday.

I wonder if any festivalgoers had questions about whether Serge would cut it as the frontman live – well, if they did within moments any doubts were quashed as he has more than stepped up to the plate.

The atmosphere was electric and the 20-plus thousand strong Victoria Park crowd was bouncing as classics like Stevie and Club Foot were belted out before the sun went down and then Fire came out to play.

Ironically, at that same aforementiojed Leeds festival, Blossoms were on the bill and last night they preceded Kasabian at Neighbourhood in fantastic fashion.

Reeling out new songs such as The Sulking Poet and Ribbon Around The Bomb, Tom Ogden had a chunk of the crowd – including me – wrapped around his finger as Oh No, Is This Real Life and Charlemagne joined the party.

Earlier yesterday, Tom Grennan and Jamie Webster took the noise levels up a few notches and a special note for The Amazons – if you gave me a few words to summarise the band that wouldn’t do it justice but I can try.

A tremendous display from a band that are only getting better. There are exciting times ahead for them ahead of a new album in September as their profile will only continue to grow – remember the day you saw them at Neighbourhood Weekender.
