BIRCHWOOD residents are reporting an increasing number of bicycle thefts in recent months.

Residents have reported that a number of bikes have been stolen lately, with Police.uk noting that bicycle thefts were the second-most-common offence reported in Birchwood in March this year.

Over the last 12 months, 23 bicycle thefts have been reported to the police - but in March (the latest month with available data) there were nine reports of theft.

There were no reports of theft in January this year; four were reported in February, and this increased to nine reported thefts in March.

Since 2019, there have been fewer than 50 reports of bicycle theft in Birchwood - almost 20 per cent of those thefts happened in March of this year.

A number of residents have complained on social media about their bikes being stolen, with some suggesting that the thefts are being committed by one person.

Images were posted on social media of what looks like a makeshift camp made near Birchwood Brook - the images show various bike parts strewn across the ground.

Donna McPherson had her bike stolen at the end of March.

She said: "It was securely locked outside of Birchwood Gym. CCTV filmed it getting stolen, police were informed and there's nothing they can do."
