THE RSPCA has issued a statement after the death of a swan was reported in Warrington over the weekend.

The swan was found dead in Sankey Valley Park, following the nesting of swans close to Bewsey Locks for a number of weeks.

A number of readers expressed their horror at the death of the animal, with some even suggesting that it had been 'mauled'.

One reader said: "It was a very distressing sight and it looked like she's been mauled.

"We weren't close enough to tell for sure but body looked mauled with featheres [sic] everywhere. Very upsetting."

At least seven eggs were laid in the swan's nest last week.

Another reader commented: "It was a very sad and upsetting sight. We have been watching her for a while from the day she made her nest to her laying the eggs.

"Her mate was crying near the nest. Just so sad"

Some readers suggested that there are mink around the area that may attack, or even kill, swans.

When contacted, the RSPCA confirmed that the incident was reported to them this afternoon, Monday.

A spokesperson said: "An incident was reported to us this afternoon (May 9) and the location appears to relate to the death of the swan on Saturday, May 7 in Sankey Valley Park.

"The caller said he saw a mink in the area (Norley Close, near the old Bewsey Lock) about a month ago and mink can attack other wildlife.

"He was advised to call Natural England’s Wildlife Management Team for information or to monitor if the mink returns to the area."
