ORFORD Football Club will help make a little slice of history tomorrow.

They will embark on their Liverpool County Cup campaign with an away fixture against Phoenix FC, who are no ordinary opposition.

Phoenix are the north west’s first refugee football team – originally set up to help Syrian refugees get involved with the game – and are making their debut in the competition.

“It’s great to mix two different cultures by kicking a ball around a pitch,” Orford manager Peter Slavin said.

“It proves football unites everyone, no matter what part of the world you are from.

“Yes we want the win to go through to the next round but mostly, we want to show the people of Warrington that football brings communities together so as a club, we are looking forward to our away fixture.”

Malik Al Shadat manages the Phoenix team and added: “I wanted to invite the refugees to play football so we could help each other to get rid of the negative effects the war left on us and be part of the local community.”

The game takes place at the Tiber Football Centre in Liverpool and kicks off at 2pm.
