Episode 4 in series 2 of Warrington Wolves cine film footage from the 1960s and 1970s recorded by Wire fans Cecil Waller and his son Mike from Appleton...

THE Wire player manager Alex Murphy throws his arms in disgust in the video below as winger Denis Curling has a try ruled out by the touch judge.

Murphy's long ball had given his Welsh teammate the chance to dive over in the corner in this John Player Trophy game against Oldham at Wilderspool Stadium on September 16, 1973.

But it mattered not, as The Wire went on to win the match and progress to the second round of a competition that was one of four they bagged silverware in that season.

Curling went on to score the last try of the game, while the footage shows other scores from Derek Noonan and Mike Nicholas.

Also on the scoresheet in the 31-14 success were Billy Pickup, Joe Price, Brian Brady and Brian Gregory, who features in the build-up to Curling's disallowed try.

As the competition progressed, Warrington defeated Castleford 18-9, Dewsbury 20-12 and St Helens 20-9 before overhauling Rochdale in the final 27-16.
