PLANS to convert a former HM Revenue and Customs office in Warrington town centre into a base for the University of Chester have been lodged.

Warrington Borough Council has received an application for planning permission for a change of use for Mersey Bank House on Barbauld Street.

The building will be renamed Sarah Parker Remond House as part of the university’s relocation of its current Padgate campus to the town centre.

Submission documents stated: “The University of Chester’s proposal to create a new town centre offer is part of a wider initiative to improve the university’s presence within the town centre.

“The purpose of the new university centre is to improve accessibility, to expand the teaching and learning offer, to deliver localised CPD, short courses and conference events and to widen access to the local community and school groups.

“The project comprises an interior fit-out of an existing three-storey building within the town centre.

“The spaces will be digitally rich, agile and flexible and allow students, staff and the wider community to have access to a range of facilities including learning spaces, simulation space, flexible office accommodation and informal social lounge spaces which are to be supported by a reception and university information point.”

The university’s move will also see it occupy units in the £142million Time Square development.
