IT was an emotional day.
There was a full house at Wilderspool Stadium.
This was the team that played a last league game for The Wire at the club's former ground.
That match was against Wakefield Trinity on September 21, 2003.
Graham Appo, excelling in the stand-off role at the time in place of the injured Lee Briers, grabbed a hat-trick of tries in the 52-12 win. He also kicked 10 goals.
Left centre Sid Domic and right winger Ben Westwood each crossed for a brace of tries for Paul Cullen's side. It was Domic who had the honour of scoring the last Super League try on the ground.
It was draining just watching in the glorious sunshine after all the anticipation for the occasion during the week.
Tears were shed, voices became hoarse and arms ached from all the clapping.
The performance fitted the occasion, as the 9,261 crowd said goodbye to the place that had been The Wire's home since 1898 ahead of the move to The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
It was a win which secured a first Super League play-off appearance for the club, just a year after the team had flirted with relegation danger under the stewardship of Steve Anderson and David Plange.
But former skipper and assistant coach Cullen's return from his experience with Whitehaven had saved the day and he was spearheading the platform being built for the success that was to follow and The Wire becoming one of the game's leading clubs again.
