A LORRY driver decided to raise money for cancer services at his local hospital trust in a rather unusual way.

Tony Jenkinson has raised £1,700 for breast care services at Warrington and Halton hospitals by completing a sponsored run wearing little more than a bright pink bra.

The Latchford resident works as an HGV driver for Morrisons and also volunteers for the North West Ambulance Service as an enhanced community first responder.

He completed the 13.1 miles that make up a half-marathon in an impressive two hours and four minutes, starting and ending his run at the famous golden gates in Warrington town centre.

Tony felt compelled to take on this challenge in honour of friends who have suffered from breast cancer.

Among these friends are Jan Gregory, who had a mastectomy approximately a year ago and is now thankfully in remission, and Michelle Thompson, who sadly passed away from breast cancer last year.

“Michelle truly was the life and soul of the party, and she is sorely missed by all that knew her,” said Tony.

Supporting him on his run was old school friend, Nicola Dak, who was also friends with Michelle and who unfortunately lost her sister, Debbie White, to breast cancer 11 years ago.

All of the money raised by Tony will go to Warrington and Halton hospitals’ Moobs and Boobs campaign, which aims to raise funds for all things breast care related at the trust, for both men and women.

Helen Higginson, fundraising manager at Warrington and Halton Hospitals’ Charity, thanked Tony for his efforts.

She said: “We are so incredibly grateful to Tony for stepping outside of the box and taking on this challenge to raise money for our patients.

“Our breast cancer unit offers amazing diagnostics and kind, compassionate care, but it could do so much more with those 'above and beyond' things that the NHS does not fund.

“These include first fit post-operative bras for mastectomy patients that would otherwise cost the patient around £60.”
