AFTER being presented with the League Leaders' Shield for the 1972-73 season, player-coach Alex Murphy led Warrington to a 30-15 home victory against Wigan in the first round of the play-offs.
In this first episode of series two of cine film footage of Warrington games – taken by Appleton resident Cecil Waller and his son Mike – Murphy, Wilf Briggs, Parry Gordon, Derek Whitehead and Dave Chisnall are among the star names of the era to feature as The Wire progress to a clash with Rochdale in pursuit of the Championship title.

There's also a glimpse of Warrington-born Wigan winger Stuart Wright, who later enjoyed success with Widnes.
Tries that afternoon were scored by winger Dennis Curling, two, second-rower Bobby Wanbon, two, loose-forward Tommy Conroy and winger Derek Noonan, while Whitehead kicked five goals and Kevin Ashcroft added a drop goal.
