IT was on this day in 1990 that Paul Bishop played his last game for Warrington Wolves.

Within a month he had signed and made his debut for arch-rivals St Helens.

The half-back's departure came after The Wire had spent big to bring in Kevin Ellis from rugby union and two-times Australian Grand Final winner Chris O'Sullivan.

Bishop's last appearance came alongside O'Sullivan in a 4-2 loss at Oldham on October 20.

It was his 113th appearance in primrose and blue, 102 of them as starts.

Warrington Guardian:

Many will remember the day he frustrated Wigan as he kicked five drop goals in a Premiership Trophy tie at Central Park, and the occasion he swallowed his tongue during a game at Wilderspool when only the swift actions of physio Tony Rothwell prevented a tragedy.

He was a crafty, niggly performer – dominant around the scrum and got under the skin of opponents.

While he had a brilliant kicking game, he also had the knack of ducking under tackles to make breaks.

And as a pocket-sized player his tackling technique was to go low, living up to the handbook that 'players can't run without their legs'.

Bishop scored 38 tries, 183 goals and 42 drop goals in a 560 points haul from the time he made his debut as a 17-year-old on October 21, 1984, in a 42-30 home win against Workington Town.

'Bish' showed all of his early promise that day, scoring a try and kicking seven goals while partnering Ken Kelly in the halves.

The following season, his first full one in the Slalom Lager Championship, was capped as he featured in The Wire side that defeated champions Halifax 38-10 in the Premiership Trophy Final at Elland Road in Leeds.

A year later he was in the halves with Paul Cullen for another Premiership Trophy Final but this time on the losing side to Wigan, 8-0, at a rain-drenched Old Trafford.

He was not around for the 1987-88 campaign, instead spending time in Australia with Cronulla whom he rejoined after cutting short the following season with The Wire too.

Bishop was at scrum half when Warrington lost in the Challenge Cup Final against Wigan at Wembley in 1990.

Warrington Guardian:

He went on to spend a year and a half with Saints, returning to Wembley but again appearing on the losing team at the hands of Wigan.

His dad Tommy had also played for Saints.

Bishop returned to Australia again and appeared three times for Gold Coast in 1991 but finished his career by spending the next two seasons with Halifax.
