A COCKERMOUTH octagenarian who walked a half marathon in memory of his wife and son is delighted to have raised £1,300.

Raymond Wood, 82, tragically lost his wife and son to pancreatic cancer and wanted to raise funds for research.

His wife, Pam, died 10 years ago aged 71, a few months before their golden wedding anniversary.

Fourteen months later he lost his only child, son Stephen, 49, to the same disease.

He completed his epic walk - around Derwentwater - at the weekend with friends Lydia Casson, Richard and Judith Johnston.

"It went well. It was spot on, cloudy and dry with no wind," said Mr Wood.

He had hoped to complete it under four hours and did just that, with five minutes to spare.

The group enjoyed celebratory refreshments at The Chalet in Portinscale.

"I was thinking if we made £300 that would be good so this is absolutely fabulous.

"It's unbelievable how people have responded to it," said Mr Wood, who helps out every week at the Bridge Cafe, which was set up by King's Church following the 2015 floods.

He also helps at King's Church cafe on Sundays.
