WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols says she was ‘heartbroken’ to receive the news that an MP died after being stabbed at a constituency surgery.

Police have confirmed the death of Conservative MP Sir David Amess after he was attacked on Friday afternoon at a church in Leigh-on-Sea.

Conservative Warrington South MP Andy Carter said: “Today’s news about the death of my friend and colleague Sir David Amess is truly devastating.

“David was an unbelievably kind and thoughtful man, a dedicated public servant who was committed to his constituency, always keen to help and generous with his time.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Sir David’s wife, family and his team at this horrific time.”

Labour’s Ms Nichols also reacted to the news.

In a tweet, she said: “Heartbroken to receive the news that Sir David Amess MP has died after being stabbed at a constituency surgery.

“Any attack on elected officials carrying out their public duties is an affront to our very democracy.

“May his memory forever be a blessing to all those who loved him.”
