PLANS to extend a primary school and provide additional car parking have been approved.

Warrington Borough Council’s application for Grappenhall Heys Community Primary School, on Stansfield Drive, was passed by the council’s development management committee at the Town Hall on Wednesday.

The application sought planning permission for extensions to the primary school together with external works including additional car parking.

There will be two small single storey extensions on the north eastern and south eastern wings of the building, a moderate size extension on the north western wing and the largest of the extensions on the south eastern wing.

In total, 10 additional car parking spaces will be added to the end of the existing car parking, while 11 additional car parking spaces will be added to the inside of the internal road.

The proposals will increase the capacity of the existing primary school from a one-form entry to a two-form entry primary school.

The school currently has approximately 210 pupils, excluding nursery, and the school would increase to by approximately a further 210 pupils – totalling 420 pupils and approximately 26 nursery places.

The numbers of classrooms will increase from nine to 16 and the increase in pupils will be phased from one-form entry, to 1.5 form entry, with the two-form entry opening within a couple of years.

New infant and junior classrooms will be created, along with new staff accommodation and a new secure entrance lobby.

The internal layout will be reconfigured to accommodate the new requirements.
