A 10-YEAR-old has tackled her first mountain climb for charity after hearing about people having to flee their homes in Afghanistan.

Mariella Kaye's walk up Snowdon will support Afganaid, a charity responding with emergency assistance and support for families who have lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of conflict in the country.

Mariella, from Knutsford, has raised almost £800 so far after completing the challenge with dad James.

"The experience was challenging for both of us – I think my body is taking a bit longer than Mariella’s to recover," James said.

"It was great to get to the top, and almost as hard to get back down.

"The weather helped a lot as it was a great day, though at the top the fog did come in and the temperature plummeted.

"Our time up was about three-and-a-half hours, but we then had to wait nearly an hour to actually get to the summit to get a photograph as it was very busy.

Knutsford Guardian:

"It then took about two hours down.

"We are glad we did it, and hopefully the money raised will make a difference."

The fundraiser came about when Mariella was clearing out some of her belongings to donate to Afghan refugees when mum Hayley realised there was limited donation points locally.

"We decided we needed to do something to raise some money," Hayley said.

Mariella was due to take her first steps up the mountain a few weeks ago, after turning a trip with the Scouts into her own fundraiser, but the event was sadly postponed.

This isn't the first time that Mariella has gone above and beyond.

The prize-winning pupil shared her design for a hospital of the future with Prime Minister Boris Johnson when she was eight years old and won the Your NHS art competition in Manchester.

This competition invited primary school children to get creative to mark £72.3 million of Government investment to develop a new adult mental health care unit in Manchester.

The judges were very impressed by Mariella's imaginative and inspiring hospital design and she was one of 10 winners who travelled to London.
