EYEBROW-RAISING comedy will meet high drama when a fresh twist on a classic DH Lawrence story comes to Warrington.

The Pyramid Arts Centre’s studio theatre will be transformed into a stage for Happy Idiot Productions who are on tour with their subversive parody, Not Lady Chatterley’s Lover who will visit on Sunday, October 10.

Written by Lawrence Russell, the raunchy story has been given the ‘Mel Brooks treatment’ with the help of the National Theatre’s Simon Godwin, Laurence Pears (The Play That Goes Wrong) and Stephen Harper (Told By An Idiot).

Lord Clifford Chatterley returns from the war confined to a wheelchair and clutching a secret. He is welcomed back to Wragby Hall by his wife, Constance, but the thought of having a child is never far from her mind despite his condition. So while Clifford dreams of becoming a leader of industry, she takes matters into her own hands with a passionate and strangely experimental affair with Mellors, the estate gamekeeper.

Not Lady Chatterley’s Lover has been winning over audiences since Edinburgh Fringe 2017 – exploring the novel’s themes of female sexuality, disability and loneliness but with a lighter touch and plenty of added farce and innuendo.

Writer Lawrence Russell said: “There are so many incredibly high-stakes moments in the book that, with a few twists, exaggerations and undercutting of the bleak themes, you can create countless laugh out loud moments.

“I’m really proud that we’ve been able to incorporate integrated audio description and creative captioning as standard for every show, meaning that those who have difficulties with their hearing or sight will get the jokes at the same time as everyone else.

“Taking a well-loved story and effortlessly moving between touching moments and perfectly timed comedy means the team have made something that shouldn’t be missed.”
