AS Warrington Wolves' preparations for their play-off campaign continue, they do so 15 years to the day that a mighty shock was produced at Headingley.

And some of the key figures involved that night will be again when The Wire get things started this time around against Hull KR at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday.

Paul Cullen steered The Wire to their first win in a play-offs game in the Super League era on September 22, 2006, with Lee Briers stealing the headlines.

Warrington Guardian:

Briers' late drop goal handed Warrington a famous 18-17 win against past champions who were then coached by future Wire boss Tony Smith – now the Hull KR chief.

Mercurial half-back Briers, current assistant coach until his 25-year association with the club finishes at this season's end, hit the target from 38 metres with 100 seconds remaining.

Warrington Guardian:

The army of primrose and blue fans crammed on to Headingley's Western Terrace were in dreamland and celebrated with the players as if silverware had been won.

Knocking third-placed Leeds out of the series on their own ground at the first hurdle was considered a massive upset.

The victory set up Wolves with an elimination semi final at holders Bradford Bulls the following weekend.

They went into the elimination play-off at Leeds without key prop Chris Leikvoll, who was ruled out with a calf injury.

Steve Pickersgill replaced shoulder injury victim Mike Cooper on the bench, while Mark Gleeson started instead of regular number nine Michael Sullivan.

Wolves had lost 54-16 at Headingley just three weeks earlier but got it right when it mattered most, even though they fell behind in the fifth minute when Rob Burrow evaded three challenges to score.

Henry Fa'afili touched down for Wolves five minutes later but Danny McGuire gave Leeds a 12-4 advantage after supporting Burrow's break in the 21st minute.

A Briers penalty reduced the deficit to six points before the interval and Sullivan crossed two minutes into the second half.

Two penalties from Kevin Sinfield restored Leeds' six-point lead but Ben Westwood touched down Briers' grubber to level the scores in the 59th minute.

Sinfield landed a drop goal to give Leeds a slender 17-16 advantage with 12 minutes remaining before Briers turned the game in Wolves' favour.

His 12-metre one-pointer made it 17-17 within two minutes of Sinfield's effort and a much more difficult attempt then gave Wolves victory in the final stages.
