THE number of new coronavirus cases being detected in Warrington has seen a significant fall over the past week.

According to the latest data from Public Health England, 582 new virus cases were recorded in the town in the week up to August 28.

This demonstrates an infection rate of 277.9 cases among every 100,000 residents, which is the 250th highest rate in the UK among all local authority areas.

The previous seven-day period up to August 21 saw 719 cases detected at a rate of 343.4.

Warrington is among 225 of 377 local areas in the UK that have seen a week-on-week fall in case rates (60 per cent), while 147 have seen a rise (39 per cent) and five are unchanged.

The highest rates are all in Scotland.
