THIS is how many donations have been made to a popular Warrington pub that is helping support Afghanistan refugees.

And Alana Maguire, who has ran The Hawthorne in Orford for three years, summed it up as ‘overwhelming.’

Following news that the council were taking in 30 refugees, the Orford Lane pub made themselves a place where items could be donated to cater for them.

Alana is blown away by the kindness of others.

“The response has been overwhelming,” the former Great Sankey High student said.

“I didn't expect anything like it. It's made me extremely proud of this community and reduced me to tears a few times.

“People have donated brand new baby items, expensive things that they could have sold but decided to give to those who needed it. Teenagers have used their own pocket money and gone out to buy bags of toiletries.

“The generosity of these people has completely blown me away and I can not thank them enough.”

Alana's original plea on Facebook was shared 450 times and she has had more than 20 people per day coming to donate.

She continued: “The power of social media can be used to do great things such as this campaign. People have donated things such as clothes, children’s toys, beddings, toiletries and prams.

“I'm aware that a lot of people don't agree with us taking anyone into the country. I respect people's opinions but I wish more people had the empathy and compassion like those in my community.

“What these refugees have been through is unimaginable. But they will now be resettling with their families in a safe place, with absolutely everything they need thanks to those who have donated."

And Alana, who grew up in Great Sankey, has a message for those that have supported her cause.

“I cannot express how thankful I am to these generous people. They have completely warmed my heart. It's so good to know that there are so many selfless, kind people out there. They have reassured me that there is still good in the world.”
