CHESHIRE Police says it has received a number of reports of drones being flown over a Warrington prison today, Tuesday.
The drone sightings relate to the sky above HM Prison Thorn Cross in Appleton Thorn.
Concerned residents nearby contacted the police over fears the drones were being used to convey drugs and other illicit items into the open prison.
But officers have confirmed that this is not the case.
The drones are in fact being operated by the prison to gain an aerial view of the site and to detect any weak points.
This comes after politicians in the town highlighted how attempts to smuggle drugs into the custodial setting are making life for nearby residents a misery.
A social media post from the force’s Appleton Police account read: “We have had a few reports about a drone flying over HMP Thorn Cross today.
“We would like to reassure anybody who has any concerns that this was in fact organised by the prison to get an overview of the premises and identify any potentially vulnerable points.”
