OLYMPICS swimming hero James Guy withdrew from the men's 100m butterfly competition in the Tokyo Olympics.

He chose to race for Team GB in the mixed 4x100m medley relay heats alongside another Warrington ace Kathleen Dawson instead, an event that was to take place just 20 minutes after the men's fly event.

That was scheduled to be the 25-year-old former Cardinal Newman High School student's only individual event during the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Warrington Under 11s Sports Personality of 2007 did not go beyond the semi-finals in the 100m fly in Rio 2016, but he was third in the European Championships last year and the World Championships in 2017.

He won a first gold medal for Warrington to celebrate in 125 years of Olympics history yesterday as part of the Team GB men's 4x200m freestyle relay team.

That was the second fasted 200m freestyle he has produced in his career.
