LUCY Glover's first Olympic Games finished on a high note this morning

The 22-year-old rower – a former Lymm High School student – helped Team GB to win the women's quadruple sculls B final alongside Hannah Scott and sisters Mathilda and Charlotte Hodgkins-Byrne.

With former Warrington Rowing Club member Glover in the stroke seat, they finished comfortably clear of second-placed New Zealand, with France third and the USA fourth in Tokyo.

It means the quartet finish the competition in seventh place overall after falling short of reaching the A final earlier in the week.

A third-place finish in their heats meant they had to go into a repechage race, but it allowed them a second bite of the cherry to force their way into medal contention.

However, a fourth-place finish in the repechage ended their medal hopes.

The A final saw China win gold, with silver going to Poland and bronze to Australia.

“In ways it was satisfying," Scott said after winning the B final

“If we hadn’t done that today I think we would have been more unsatisfied. We pulled ourselves back to where we in the first place.

“I don’t think we quite showed what we had in the first part of the regatta, but I am really proud we got ourselves to this point today and pulled us through.

“For that reason I am satisfied, but hungry again I guess so onwards and upwards.

“What we learned from the regatta, is something that will live with me for the rest of my time in rowing.

“If we come away with maybe a place or two higher, not saying we wouldn’t want to go for everything, but it would have been a different type of hunger we would have been leaving with.

“What we have been left with, is going to drive us forward for the next three years. It is horrendous at the moment, but I think as we move forward it’ll come through.

“Hopefully this result isn’t going to be our defining moment and it’s just part of the journey.”
