VISITORS to Time Square will be taken on a fascinating trip back in time this weekend as the Time Machine event returns to Warrington.

Launched last year with a pop-up people’s history space on Bridge Street, this year’s event is offering even more for the whole family to enjoy.

Running from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, Time Square will become a hive of activity – from street theatre and exhibits, to arts and crafts – all telling the story of Warrington’s past.

Among the activities on offer are performances from Community Objectives theatre group, which will bring Warrington’s most influential people from the past to life.

There will also be the chance to visit Warrington’s ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ and handle objects from the past brought along by prestigious local heritage organisations, Lymm Heritage Centre, Warrington Museum of Freemasonry and The Museum of Policing in Cheshire.

Visitors will be able to get an exclusive peek at what Fiddler’s Ferry looked like when it was fully operational through the artwork of Shaun Smyth.

As well as this, there will be the opportunity to share your vision for the future of Warrington Museum with artist Stef Woof.

Topping the event off, you can join Warrington Crafters to see their wonderful knitted representations of Warrington’s most iconic buildings – and try your hand at creating a piece of history yourself.

As an extra treat, Warrington Market is also hosting a special, outdoor vegan market.

Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member responsible for culture, said: “The Time Machine is a fantastic, free, family event, giving everyone the opportunity to discover more about Warrington’s fascinating past.

“From performance and art, to displays and craft, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

“It is a great way to celebrate Warrington’s proud history through a diverse range of activities.

“This event paves the way to new season of cultural and heritage events taking place in Warrington, and we are working with our partners to deliver a rich, exciting programme which everyone can enjoy safely.”

The Time Machine event marks the start of the build up to Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, which this year will take place between September 10 and 19.

Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history for free.

More information about places in Warrington taking part in this year’s Heritage Open Days festival will be released in the coming weeks.
