GREAT Sankey High School staff and students ended the year by celebrating their award ceremony – however, this year’s event had a twist.

The school’s first ever Academy Awards was held in a Covid-friendly manner, involving a drive-thru experience meaning the students' families could watch from the school yard.

The Academy Awards recognises the efforts and achievements of student across all subject areas following nominations from their teachers.

This year, the trophies were individually made by local glass artist, Helen Davies, are were ‘absolutely stunning.’

Head teacher, Mr Shannon, said: "We had planned for a star-studded event in our new sports hall but when the delta variant put that at risk, rather than cancel we opted for our first ever, and hopefully only, drive-in event with students performing and hosting the occasion and award winners and their families parking on the school yard and then walking up the red carpet to receive their awards.

‘‘It was a lovely way to end the year, celebrating the hard work of students and our staff.

‘‘We are however, very much looking forward to and hoping for a return to a more normal school experience in September."
