CONSERVATIVES in Warrington have called for a public inquiry into proposals to raise a toll bridge fee by more than 700 per cent.

This comes after news that Manchester Ship Canal Company, which owns and operates Warburton Toll Bridge, is planning to increase the crossing fee from 12p per trip to £1 a trip, or 50p per trip for people who live locally.

The company, which is owned by Peel Ports, says the increase is necessary to fund a £6.5million project to upgrade the bridge between Warburton and Rixton and approach roads.

The project would also introduce an automated tolling system, reduce queues and delays and restrict unsuitable vehicles.

The Conservative Group of Warrington Borough Council says it welcomes the proposed long-term investment in the structure of the bridge and automated measures to help control vehicle weights, heights, widths and speed.

It also says it welcomes Peel Ports’ belated proposals to bring the bridge into the 21st Century by introducing a free flow tolling system and upgrading approach roads.

But the group says it is ‘unacceptable’ that many motorists should bear toll increases of 733 per cent, and it has called for a public inquiry to look at the long-term future of the bridge ‘potentially without any tolls whatsover’ for motorists.

Members say the inquiry could for instance look at future funding coming from canal users rather than motorists.

Kath Buckley, Conservative Group leader and Lymm councillor, said: “We welcome Peel Ports’ proposals for upgrades to the bridge and its approach roads.

“They will improve traffic flow, restrict unsuitable vehicles and ensure the structure of the bridge is maintained for the long term.

“However, we strongly oppose Peel Ports’ suggestion that motorists should bear toll increases of more than 700 per cent.

“A public inquiry should look at other options for funding, including from Peel Ports itself from its ship canal business.

“After long delays, I today also urge Peel Ports to progress the long awaited maintenance of the three swing bridges at Latchford, Stockton Heath and on Chester Road.”

The toll fee hike has also been opposed by Warrington Borough Council, which said it ‘absolutely cannot support’ the proposals.

Peels Ports has launched a month-long consultation on its Sustainable Investment Plan for the bridge.
