PRIMARY school children in Birchwood were all treated to free ice cream this week - thanks to a remarkable gesture.

Peter Kelly, from P K Ices, decided to give all the youngsters an ice cream after receiving £500 from a GoFundMe page.

The GoFundMe page was set up after Peter lost £80 worth of ice creams and was threatened to have his tyres slashed.

He said that when visiting Birchwood Boulevard on part of his round, travellers were at the back of the site and began to line up for ice creams.

After being warned by a security guard to leave to avoid his van being damaged, Peter tried to stop serving the queue.

Peter, 42, said that this is when they began threatening to slash his tyres if he didn’t continue to serve them.

The ice cream man, from Locking Stumps, said: ‘‘I thought if they slash my tyres that will cost me £500.’’

In the end they left with £80 worth of ice cream, unpaid for.

When Peter got home he saw a Facebook comment warning about the travellers on the back of the Boulevard, so he commented to say what had happened.

A funding page was set up to raise £80 for Peter, however the Birchwood community ended up raising £500.

With the extra money, Peter decided to use this to give every primary school child in Birchwood from all three schools a free ice cream.

Peter, who has been an ice cream man for four years, added: ‘‘It was obviously really nice that everyone has done that for me, but it came to £500 and I don’t want to keep that money so I’ll just put it back into the community.

‘‘Since then, I’ve been doing the rounds and people have been coming to my van asking if I’m okay.

‘‘Birchwood is a good community.’’
