WARRINGTON urgently needs a pop up weekend vaccine centre to help stem the tide of rising new coronavirus infections in the town.

That is the call from Warrington Borough Council chief executive Steven Broomhead.

He said the town wants a pop up centre this weekend and next to give hundreds of people the chance to get a vaccine.

Similar pop us have been held in Wirral and other parts of the region as the Delta variant, which originated in India, sweeps across the north west.

Warrington saw an 80 per cent rise in new cases in the past week, fuelled among the younger population.

More than 400 people tested positive in the town in the past seven days with new cases as their highest level since February.

Fourteen patients are currently being treated for coronavirus in Warrington Hospital.

And Mr Broomhead said the race is on between the virus and the vaccination programme.

However he believes Warrington is being treated unfairly.

He added "I have been asking for a pop up centre for this weekend and next.

"Everyone has been working hard on the existing programme and credit to them for that.

"However we seem to be missed out for a pop up centre, compared to other parts of the region.

"The infections are rising here and we need match that with more vaccinations. We have schools and colleges considering if they can stay open because of the number of cases.

"We have a surge in infections here of 80 per cent and we are ready."

A pop up centre opened at Orford Jubilee Hub yesterday, Wednesday and another will take place next Wednesday.

However Mr Broomhead says a weekend centre would allow more people to be reached and more vaccines delivered.
