A TEACHER from Grappenhall is taking on the London Marathon in order to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

Greg Allcock, from Grappenhall, is taking part in the challenge in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The computer science teacher at Wirral Grammar School for Boys is raising money for the charity after one of his pupils tragically died from cancer after a long battle.

Both pupils and staff of the school have been raising money for the charity and the school total for the past twelve months currently stands at more than £20,000.

The 48-year-old said: "The charity, the Teenage Cancer Trust, is close to the hearts of everyone at the school, some of whom have experienced the sadness of losing a close friend due to this terrible disease.

"Everyone is determined to fight against it and help bring young people the reassurance and support they deserve."

Greg is currently training five times a week around the streets of Warrington and surrounding areas, and is also raising funds through cake sales and a fantasy football league.

And he is braced for a 'Lop the Mop' challenge – with the more money raised, the shorter his hair cut.

He has pledged to get a skinhead for £350, or a Mohican for £450.

Greg added: "If anyone sees someone running along looking grim but determined and wearing a Teenage Cancer Trust top, then it may well be me.

"I would like to say a huge thank you for the generosity and support that has been shown by so many people from all walks of life who have gone out of their way to give to this worthy charity.

"Together we can make a difference and bring real hope to so many young people facing this illness."

Greg has set a target of £2,000, and has so far raised £1,000 ahead of the run in October.
