Frank Lythgoe’s Warrington Anglers’ Association column

REPORT of the week must go to veteran member Keith Wernham.

The 69-year-old showed his skills in how to play a carp on 4lbs mainline, a 2lbs hook-length, and size 18’s hook.

He was enjoying his session at Appleton Reservoir fishing a waggler in six feet of water, feeding caster with red maggot on the hook and catching roach.

His float shot under and he struck into what was obviously not a roach.

A passing member who had stopped to watch dug his carp landing net out of his car.

After about an hour and a half of playing the fish the 2lbs hook-length finally gave up the ghost and snapped just as a 20lb quality carp slid safely into the net.

Phil Brown caught a 22lb common carp from Grey Mist which fell for a fake pellet over a small bed of pellets.

It was the third he had recently caught which included a 19lb 10oz 0dr mirror and another common of 22-8-0. As usual, thanks Phil for sharing your catch reports.

Dave Grimshaw fished Wide Hole at Poynton and despite the muddy conditions he had an enjoyable three-hour session with a dozen roach, two bream, and a lone tench around 2lbs. Dave fished a small groundbait feeder and alternated between pinkie and double maggot.

Mike Pritchard had Statham Pool to himself on Saturday when he fished his usual waggler method using maggot or pinkie.

He hooked and lost what he reckoned was a bream and decided to change to caster. He hooked a carp which exploded to the surface before immediately bidding farewell.

He ended up with around 30 fish, roach, skimmers, hybrids, and a single dace which now seem resident in the feeder stream.

Our Disabled and Over 60s Monday match was held on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge.

Mike Worley won with 2-1-0 made up of five roach, a gudgeon, and a bream. Veteran matchman Rod Frazer stuck with a pole and caster approach fished tight against the far bank to end up with 12 roach for 2-0-0. Twenty-one anglers turned out.
