WARRINGTON experienced a fall in the number of new coronavirus cases detected over the past week, the latest data shows.

According to figures from Public Health England for the seven days up to May 6, which is the most recent period for which they are available, 30 new Covid-19 infections were recorded through lab and rapid lateral flow testing.

This demonstrates an infection rate of 14.3 cases per every 100,000 residents in the town, which is the 176th highest rate in England compared with all other local authority areas.

The previous week up to April 29 saw 46 new cases identified at a rate of 21.9.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 107 (34 per cent) have seen a rise in rates, while 196 (62 per cent) have seen a fall and 12 are unchanged.

Erewash in Derbyshire has the highest rate in England (185.5), followed by Bolton (133.5) and Blackburn with Darwen (84.8).
